EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE & PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS

POOR TRANSPORTATION

Elefsina currently suffers from poor road and pavement conditions, in addition, lack of public transport is contributing in the traffic congestion as residents need to use their cars daily.

A large number of abandoned cars are left in the streets of the city which reduces the number of available parking spaces on public roads as well as weakens the general im- age of the city itself.

REDUNDANT RAILWAY LINES

Redundant railway lines built on raised ground divide the city in pieces and poor railway crossings prevent seamless transportation from happening throughout the city.

LACK OF STRATEGIC URBAN DESIGN

Lack of consistent urban development and strategic ex- pansion of the city have led to a heavy industrial activity throughout the city, which replaces infrastructure from the list of priorities with industrial revenue.

Factories are also highly contributing to atmosphere pollution among the rest of the damages they tend to cause when placed within residential areas or where it is convenient for the factory owner.

For instance, industrial units have been built where schools were meant to. Once again, industrial revenue shatters the much needed infrastructure, the local residents need.

USE OF LAND DISOBEYANCE

As a result, a general sense of disobeyance to the neighbourhood plans and uses of land has been cultivated, this has led to an overall negligence being cast on most parts of the city. The archaeological sites are no exception, although they have been maintained and preserved quite diligently, the responsible authority has failed to promote and advertise the sites successfully.

NEGLECTED WATERFRONT

Coastal properties and waterfront developments have also been spoiled by the industrialisation of Elefsina. A great opportunity has been missed and the local residents are facing polluted waters, shipwrecks and a skyline full of chimneys on a daily basis.

A number of solutions have been proposed by a thesis proposal of a student (Vassi Avgi)of the National Technical University of Athens. Although the proposal is in its entirety on a theoretical level and lacks the visual reference needed, it is a strong incentive that can spark future developments and the overall regeneration of Elefsina.
